The fourth place in the penultimate round of the VLN endurance racing championship at the Nürburgring was sufficient for the Team Adrenalin Motorsport with drivers Daniel Zils, Uwe Ebertz and Norbert Fischer to secure in advance the titles in the drivers’ and in the team championships of the BMW M235i Racing Cup class which was introduced this year. With 200 points each, the driver trio is uncatchable even after consideration of the two weakest results which will be deleted in the final score of the drivers’ championship. In the team classification and with 222 points, Adrenalin Motorsport has an advance of 34 points ahead of Scheid-Partl Motorsport. As the maximum of 26 points can be achieved for a win at the season finale, the decision in this category, too, is already made. The class win at the ROWE DMV 250 Miles Race went to Emin Akata and Michael Schrey of the Team Walkenhorst Motorsport. Positions two and three were gained by Scheid-Partl Motorsport and Sorg Rennsport.
Mr. Unger, you have started the season with the target to win the first season of the BMW M 235i Racing Cup Class. Now you have achieved this target?
Matthias Unger: “That is correct. We have completed our mission. I am very happy with the season. We have shown strong performances in the races and we also had that little bit of luck which need to score this success. We would have preferred to finish the Cup win with a victory but you could see that our drivers wanted to be on the safe side and did under no circumstances want to take any risk to retire. They may have been a little too cautious hereby but that doesn’t matter today.”
Which role did the drivers generally play in winning the title?
Unger: “A very decisive one. They all have done a brilliant job. Their strong point is that their speed is quite balanced and that they all have a lot of experience at the Nordschleife. They are true experts at this track. This is a great advantage in particular at the 24 Hour Race in completing the race without any major incidents.”
Irrespective of the win of the title, what is your opinion on the first season of the BMW M235i Racing Cup Class?
Unger: “This Cup in a very interesting platform for us. It has taken a very positive development throughout the season. This weekend, the grid figured 16 BMW M235i Racing in the class and this is an impressive figure. We hope that the trend will continue this way so that we will have even more cars in 2015. That would be great even though it would of course be more difficult to defend the title if this happens. But that is obviously our target.”
