The decision in the BMW M235i Racing Cup 2015 was still open until the final race of the season – and it was taken in a dramatic finish. Di Martino and Oberheim of the Team TKS-Motorsport were level on points with the Bonk-Motorsport duo Ralf Schall and Mario Merten when they started into the season finale. A few corners after the start it looked already as if the title winners were certain when the car driven by Schall was forced into a spin and dropped back to the end of the field in the Cup class.
Di Martino and Oberheim were on their way to a secure title win when Oberheim lost control of his car in a slippery section shortly before the race end and crashed into the guardrails. As the race, however, was stopped in the same lap due to the increasingly dense fog and the classification was based on the positions in the lap before Oberheim’s accident, the TKS-Motorsport duo took the victory in the day classification of the BMW M235i Racing Cup class and moreover won the drivers’ title.
“Initially, I tried to bring the damaged car somehow back to the pits, but it was hopeless”, said Oberheim. “Fortunately, a track marshal informed me quickly that the race was stopped and that we nevertheless had gained the title. I was extremely released then.” Di Martino said: “First of all, everyone in the pits was somehow stony-faced but then we were overwhelmed with joy. It is fantastic to have won this title.” Team racing one, having crossed the finish line in first position on Saturday, was excluded after the race. The team classification was already decided in advance at the penultimate race of the season in favour of Bonk Motorsport.
