Two results on the podium for Hyundai at the Opel 6h ADAC Ruhr-Pokal Race, the seventh round of the VLN endurance racing championship Nürburgring; the Hyundai i30 Turbo celebrated a superior win in class SP2T, the Hyundai Veloster Turbo completed the brilliant result for the team with third position in the same category.
„A fantastic success for Hyundai“, said Markus Schrick, Hyundai Motor Deutschland Managing Director and driver in both cars at this VLN race. „Everyone has done a brilliant job. Today, we have once again demonstrated how competitive and reliabe our race cars which are close to series production are. It is simply great fun to chase around such a legendary track as the Nürburgring Nordschleife in these cars.“
In the qualifying, the Hyundai i30 Turbo of the driver quartet Markus Schrick, Jürgen Schumann, Heiko Hammel and Michael Bohrer succeeded in setting second fastest lap time in the competitive class SP2T. The sister car Hyundai Veloster Turbo with drivers Markus Schrick, Peter Schumann, Heiko Hammel and Rory Penttinen was qualified in position four on the grid.
Already in the first hour of this longest race of the season, the i30 Turbo which already scored a class win at the Nürburgring 24h Race right in its first year of participating in the VLN went into the lead of its class. The Veloster Turbo, participating since three years in the VLN and having scored a 24h class win in 2014, provided a one-two-lead for Hyundai. „The track was still a little wet before the start of the race“, informed team manager Peter Schumann. „We took the right decision in fitting slick tyres on the cars because after two laps already, we had quite an advantage compared to the competitors on rain tyres.“
Due to the various driver changes as provided for in the regulations, the two Hyundai changed positions several times during the race. Shortly before the race end, the team in the Veloster Turbo had to come to the pits again for a driver change and lost their second class position as a consequence. Peter Schumann nevertheless draws a positive conclusion: „We are really happy with first and third positions. Compared to the positions on the starting grid, both cars have moved up by more than 30 places and we had no technical problem at all.“
