Marcel Tiemann, driver in the Phoenix team, has been transferred from Bologna to the University Hospital of Munich-Großhadern last Friday (11 June). “He is no longer in a perilous condition, his condition is stable, the body values have improved and are partly even back to normal so that the transport in a medical plane was possible without any further risks”, informs his family. “The physicians in Bologna have done an excellent job and we all are very grateful. Extensive examinations will be carried out in Munich in the next days in order to determine the further treatment. The phase of rehabilitation shall start very soon and will probably cover a longer period.” During the next days, Marcel Tiemann will gradually be awakened from his artificial coma in which he was placed on Whit Monday (24th May).
Without this being his fault, Marcel Tiemann suffered a very bad accident on 23rd May in his Audi R8 LMS entered by Phoenix Racing for the Italian round of the International GT-OP in Imola. He was pushed by an Aston Martin at the start and had a high-speed crash into the wall beside the track before he was catapulted back onto the track and hit again by another car. The 36 years old former Mercedes works driver and five times winner of the 24h Nürburgring in a Phoenix-Opel and in a Manthey Porsche, who was born in Hamburg, suffered a heavy traumatic brain injury, a cervical fracture and fractures of several rips. After being recovered, he was first brought to the Hospital of Imola before being further flown to the Hospital of Bologna. During the past three weeks, the treating physicians have confirmed a normal, positive healing process with regard to the traumatic brain injury and to the rip fractures.
“We are very happy with the positive development and keep our fingers crossed that the healing process of Marcel makes a progress as positive as in the last days and that no complication will arise”, says Phoenix team manager Ernst Moser. “Marcel is not only an excellent racing driver but he is above all also an adorable and friendly person which is really well-liked by everyone and he enjoys a high reputation. This is not only reflected in the many offers to help but also in the countless wishes for a quick recovery transmitted by friends, colleagues, fans, just from everywhere.”
