Frank Totz and Peter Kreuer celebrated their second victory at the 6th round of the tv14 Honda Civic Cup during the 6 Hour Race, qualifying round of the BFGoodrich Langstreckenmeisterschaft. Their joint-favourites Dupré / Nett and the Junior-Team with Nägele / Nägele / Scheerbarth retired due to accidents.
Totz / Kreuer already had an excellent practice and gained pole position with a fantastic lap time of 9.57,245; closely followed by the VLN Honda Junior-Team of the Cologne University of Applied Science which set a time of 9.57,856.
At the beginning of the race, the top three in the championship had a hard battle for each metre and the second Civic entered by Dupré-Nett Motorsport with drivers Jürgen and Joachim Nett as well as Claus Dupré was also able to keep up. Just before the first refuel stop it started to rain and Nett / Nett / Dupré lost a lot of time due to the heavy traffic in the pit lane. With the fastest race lap, the juniors were able to pull away by up to 15 seconds from the series winners Nett / Dupré.
An incident occurred in lap 12 just before the section Schwalbenschwanz. Junior driver Timo Scheerbarth’s explained: “I was about to overtake a Mercedes which wanted to let me pass, but which was then breaking much too early and too heavily, I hit him at the rear side and crashed into the guardrails.” In the same lap, Jürgen Nett came onto some oil in the section Schwedenkreuz and the car spun with the rear into the guardrails. “There were no oil flags in that section which was confirmed by the spectators,” said the disappointed driver.
Unfortunately, this was not the last accident of the day. One hour later, Kuhlmann / Scheuring / Anspann who were on dry-weather tyres came onto a wet section in the fast turn Flugplatz. Rolf Scheuring had to be brought to the hospital in Adenau with thoracic and lumbar vertebra injuries.
Totz / Kreuer won with an advance of almost one minute ahead of the guest team with drivers Nett / Nett / Dupré; the ladies’ team Schmid / Wassertheurer / Müllenmeister lost their second place in the last lap due to a lack of fuel but were able to finish ahead of the two Mathol cars driven by Dr. Schäfer / Schicht / Rühl and Sandberg / Nordeng / Steinbraten into places four and five.
Honda Sport Pokal:
Venn / Hoppe gained pole position with their Accord in class SP3 with a time of 9.17,583 minutes. During the race, they had a fascinating fight about first position with Weber / Berms and the Kissling-Astra. Towards the end of the race, the Mathol-S2000 was slowed down due to too soft tyres so that they had to be satisfied with second position ahead of the Fleper-Accord. Place two in class SP4 was sufficient for Geulen / Kühn in their race&event-S2000 to stay in the lead of the Sport Pokal classification.
