VLN is raising teams’ awareness of the need for responsible handling of compressed air tanks

In the run-up to the 55th Adenauer ADAC Rundstrecken-Trophy (19 October), the VLN sent a circular to the teams competing in the ADAC Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie to raise their awareness of the issue of ‘how to handle compressed air tanks’. The circular refers to existing standards, with further measures planned for the future. At the same time, those affected by the accident prior to NLS4 have already received initial donations from the donation pot set up specifically for this purpose.

‘After the incident, we quickly contacted the expert organisation DEKRA and the Interessengemeinschaft Langstrecke Nürburgring (ILN),’ says VLN Sports Director Christian Vormann. ’However, since we do not yet have the results of the expert opinion commissioned by the Koblenz public prosecutor’s office, we have decided to emphasise the existing instructions for handling compressed air tanks for the time being.’ Even when it comes to the important topic of safety, the VLN does not want to ignore the feasibility for the teams. Vormann continues: ‘We can only take specific measures once the cause has been clarified. As soon as this is the case, we will adapt our requirements, taking into account the expert opinions of DEKRA and ILN.

Great willingness to donate in the NLS family

The NLS family shows solidarity. After the accident, the VLN set up a dedicated donation account to cushion any costs incurred by the long-term consequences for the people affected. At this point in time, a mid-five-figure amount has been received.

‘The sympathy in the paddock after the accident at NLS4 was great, which is also reflected in the willingness to donate,’ says VLN managing director Mike Jäger. ’We are overwhelmed by the amount received so far. This is now being managed by us in trust. To this end, we are in close contact with the people most affected, whose individual recovery is progressing well in each case. The first payments have been made.’

The victims are grateful. One of the seriously injured, who does not wish to be named, says: ‘My life changed abruptly on 2 August. I would like to thank the VLN for quickly deciding to set up a donation account. And, of course, my heartfelt thanks go to the donors. Through their solidarity, I have received help that has been very important in my case.’
